Those who recognize a calling to serve at the banquet table of the Lord accept special delegation as extraordinary ministers of communion or what we commonly call Lay Eucharistic Ministers.
These who serve in this ministry assist the celebrating priest at Mass to distribute the Eucharist, the Sacred Body & Blood of our Lord, Jesus Christ. This is a very special calling to those who have a deep understanding and appreciation of the real presence and who wish to bring this to the people.
In addition to serving at Mass, some Lay Eucharistic Ministers also take Communion to the Homebound.
“Because the sick are prevented from celebrating the Eucharist with the rest of the community, the most important visits are those during which they receive Holy Communion. In receiving the body and blood of Christ, the sick are united sacramentally to the Lord and are reunited with the Eucharistic community from which illness has separated them.” (from the RITE OF PASTORAL CARE OF THE SICK)
If you or someone you know would like to receive the Eucharist while at home, or in an extended-care or nursing facility, please contact the church office.
