The ministry of Lector is one of proclaiming the living Word of God. The Lector is invited to enter a relationship with a Word that is creative, powerful and effective. He or she then imparts that living Word to the congregation each time scripture is read. Lectors are the storytellers of our faith. Each time we hear the Word proclaimed we learn more about our history, about God’s plan for us. We learn who we are and in this we establish our identity. The Lector’s job is to impart this knowledge in a manner that inspires the hearer to both listen and absorb.

Qualifications for Lector are a love of the Word of God, a pleasant speaking voice and reasonable comfort in speaking before a crowd. Techniques can be learned, but a desire to proclaim the Word comes from within. Time commitment involves serving at Mass approximately every 4-8 weeks, serving at occasional special services and some training. The greater time commitment comes as you prepare your reading. Each Lector should prayerfully study and practice the assigned reading throughout the weeks before serving.
